This presentation will discuss why Group IV's breakthrough silicon-based lighting technology provides the ideal replacement for the conventional lightbulb in the context of global legislation which will effectively outlaw the ubiquitous incandescent lamp over the next five years. The Group IV light emitter technology will be described and it will be compared with alternatives such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and compound semiconductor based LEDs, highlighting the major cost and performance benefits that derive from Group IV's silicon-based approach. The discussion will also range into topics such as the product and channel model; funding, both government and private; the protection of intellectual property; university collaboration; and the Ottawa start-up experience in general.
